Post Title:   Money Advice Assistant

Grade:    £18,000 pro rata + pension

Hours:    22.5 hours

Supervisory Responsibility:     None

Reports to:    Advice Supervisor


Purpose of Job:

To support and respond to the needs of clients as part of a very busy service and to assist by providing information and confidential advice on a wide range of money advice issues. To support and enable residents to identify their own issues and help them acquire the necessary skills to address them.

Duties include:

  • Give front line advice through any of the projects outreach locations
  • To deliver welfare benefits/rights
  • Respond to requests for help made in person, by phone, by letter or by e-mail.
  • Interview clients to assess their current situation.
  • Maximise client’s income where appropriate
  • Undertake basic debt work and refer to internal specialists as required
  • Research and identify possible course of action and advise clients on these options
  • Develop and maintain up to date detailed knowledge of the law relating to welfare benefits, housing and debt.
  • Guide clients towards taking appropriate action
  • Liaise with other organisations and agencies on behalf of clients
  • Refer clients internally or to other agencies as appropriate
  • Prepare and maintain individual case files on Advice Pro Management system
  • Produce written materials, explanatory leaflets and or promotional display information
  • Research general fields of advice work to remain up to date with legislation and procedures
  • Undertake regular training as required
  • Ensure all work conforms to GL Communities policy and procedures.
  • Abide by GL Communities Health and Safety and Equality and Diversity and Safeguarding policies
  • Ensure all case work conforms to the AQS and peer review quality mark requirements
  • Undertake other appropriate tasks as required or directed by Managers



  • Work or voluntary experience in the advice sector
  • Experience of use of computers
  • Experience in a management system e.g. Advice Pro
  • Experience of supporting staff



  • Sound knowledge of the welfare benefits system
  • Knowledge and understanding of debt – related problems and money advice work



  • Able to show an overview of good quality advice training e.g. wiser advisor and specific training days with a professional trainer

  • Good level of IT literacy
