Colin's Story

‘Colin’, who’s 65, lost his job during the Covid outbreak in April 2020, leaving him with no income.  He was living in a two-bedroom social housing flat in Stroud at the time.

GL Communities helped Colin claim New Style Jobseekers Allowance, Universal Credit for his Housing Costs and Council Tax Support. He didn’t have access to a computer, so our advisor made the claims online on his behalf online.  We also provided him with Foodbank and Fuel Support whilst his claims were processed.

GL Communities helped lower Colin’s bills.  A successful application to Severn Trent’s Big Difference Scheme lowered his water charges and through U Switch he cut his gas and electricity charges.  A Discretionary Housing Payment over 13 weeks lowered housing costs.

All this kept him afloat until June 2020 when he was able to claim his State Pension, a further application was made to Pension Credit to top up his income.

Clin says the whole system is a ‘minefield’ and wouldn’t have known where to turn if he hadn’t been referred to GL Communities.  He says our help eased a very difficult and stressful situation and would recommend GL Communities to others in a similar situation.
